Delivery

General information

Every delivery is unique. How will you feel? How long will it take? It is important to provide the best possible support and to empower the woman so she actively participates in the natural delivery process and experiences the delivery in the best possible way. We place great emphasis on the mother's/parents' own wishes (e.g. delivery position, pain relief). In order to meet these requirements as effectively as possible - tell us or write them down on a piece of paper! Cooperation between us and the parents-to-be is important and positive! Also available are modern and up-to-date testing and monitoring methods to ensure proper care.

At the Delivery unit we admit pregnancies with complications. We also deal with high-risk pregnancies and complicated deliveries (e.g. twins, breech deliveries and premature deliveries), which are referred from Ljungby hospital.

We have excellent cooperation with the high-technology newborn unit where there are qualified paediatricians and other staff available 24 hours a day.

The midwives and paediatric nurses that you meet at the delivery unit will also be available the next day at the Baby unit, as we have a rotation system and want to provide continuity of care.

The delivery unit and Baby unit at Växjö form a teaching clinic.

You are welcome to take a guided tour of our delivery and Baby unit. We meet in the waiting room of the delivery unit Tuesdays and Thursdays at 2 pm.

Pain relief

Various forms of pain relief are offered 24 hours a day.

Different forms of pain relief are suited to different stages of the delivery. Account is taken of your needs and the best interests of the baby.

We can offer:

Bath
Shower
Acupuncture
Electric acupuncture
Hot towels
Sterile moist tissues
Epidural anaesthesia
TENS (electrical nerve stimulation through the skin)
Laughing gas
Pethidine
PCB - paracervical blockage (local anaesthetic applied around the cervix during the dilation phase)
PUD - pudendal blockage (pelvic floor anaesthesia that provides relief during the pushing phase)
Local anaesthetic (for the vagina and diaphragm during the pushing phase)

Complicated deliveries

Required interventions are done in a professional manner by midwives and delivery doctors, in cooperation with paediatricians and anaesthetists.

Caesarean section

You cannot know in advance how a pregnancy or delivery will develop. Something unpredictable can always happen to you or the baby. We have the organisation and readiness to perform Caesarean sections at all hours, which means the operation can be performed within 8-20 minutes. There are many staff in the operating theatre. There is also a paediatrician there should the baby require direct care.

If he wants, the father can be present in the operating theatre. In cases of very acute Caesarean section the father will have to wait outside or in the delivery unit.

Planned Caesarean section

In cases of planned Caesarean section you receive help from midwives, doctors, anaesthetists etc. to prepare the Caesarean section. You decide in consultation with the anaesthetist if you want an epidural or to be awake or anaesthetised.

If it is known that the baby will be born prematurely, you can visit the newborn department before the Caesarean section.

If you have special wishes, do not be afraid to ask!

Acute Caesarean section

A number of Caesarean sections are more urgent, and are then acute or unplanned.

The delivery is already in progress, or something has happened to the baby that means it must be delivered quickly. In cases of acute Caesarean section, everything happens quickly, and it can sometimes be a bewildering experience for the mother and father.

Vacuum extractor and forceps

The vacuum extractor or forceps can be used to speed things up at the end of the delivery.

Premature delivery

If labour pains occur before 37 weeks of pregnancy are up, there is a risk of premature delivery. Sometimes medical treatment cannot stop the delivery. The nearby neonatal department cares for premature babies. The proximity to the neonatal department means that the mother and father can participate in care all day round.

Twins and breech births

These are handled by midwives and doctors in cooperation with paediatricians.
